Diversity could improve life benefits in British society

By Cass Gilroy

Quality of life would be better for everyone in Britain in a society which genuinely valued each individual, backed up by consistent equality legislation, according to Julie Mellor, the former Chair of the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC). But she added that legislation is but one ingredient in the broad cultural changes which are needed to create a society that values diversity. She said that Britain's equality laws are in a mess, and they are inconsistent and incomplete offering different levels of protection for different groups and none at all for others.

My travel plans to the past

By Scheherazade Hayward

On the pin board in our kitchen is a yellowing piece of paper with a few lines from the “Shropshire Lad” which end with the ‘land of the lost content’ and ‘the happy highways’ forever denied to Housman. Usually obscured by urgent notices and snapshots holidays, it nevertheless surfaces often enough to have left a subliminal trace of nostalgia on my consciousness. It is a strange sentiment, because it is an inherent one for a country I have only seen once as a five year old.

Britain’s muddled response to Sharia multiculturalism

Dr. Rowan Williams, the outgoing Archbishop of Canterbury, is viewed as one of the most thoughtful people in British public life. But his call for aspects of the Muslim legal practice, or Sharia law, to be recognised as a ‘supplementary jurisdiction’ in England is badly muddled. He was quite right to say that we need to think about how the law applies in a plural society of overlapping identities. But he comes close to dismissing the rule of law as abstract universalism.
